Prospects of Babel - Greg and Leonie Marinovich

by Andrew "Kosmo" Spies

Pulitzer Prize winner, Greg Marinovich and Leonie Marinovich, recently opened a new exhibition Prospects of Babel at The Bell-Roberts Contemporary Art Gallery. As luck would have it I was in Cape Town this last week, so I popped in to have a look.

The exhibition features photos from the Democratic Republic of Congo, they show an array of scenes from the lives of the citizens of the country. Leonie's work shows the streets of Lubumbashi, and the poverty being experienced by the indigenous people. The DRC is one of the largest countries in Africa, rich in mineral wealth, but poverty stricken by the illegal sale of natural resources and corruption which runs rife within the government. Many of the photos feature the illegal diggers who sell the natural resources through the black market.

Greg's work on the other hand reveal the traditional and cultural side, concentrating on the king of the Babuka, as well as the streets of Kinshasa. The exhibition has a strong message, revealing much about the life of the people of the DRC.

The exhibition is running from the 3 December 2008 - 17 January 2009, if your in Cape Town during this time stop in and have a look. The Bell-Roberts Gallery is situated on Sir Lowery street, Woodstock, Cape Town.

The gallery is currently also hosting another exhibition, that of Kevin Brand's Pieces of 8, the exhibition features some interesting sculptures based around the components of motherboards and circuit boards within PCs.
